Carers Emergency Response Service (CERS):
Do you worry about what would happen to the person you look after if you were suddenly taken ill, had an accident or were seriously delayed?
In December 2008 Crossroads Care Cheshire East launched a new service in partnership with the Cheshire Carers Centre designed to give carers the peace of mind that, if in the event of an emergency affecting them, the person they look after will be well cared for. This is called the CARERS EMERGENCY RESPONSE SERVICE (CERS).
The service is free of charge and covers Cheshire East.
How this service works?
Initially carers register for this service. The CERS team will then work with the carer and the person they care for to put together a Contingency Plan detailing what they want to happen in an emergency. This information is then stored on a secure and confidential database, managed by Crossroads Care Cheshire East, for use in the event of an emergency. The carer will also be issued with a Carers Emergency Card which will identify them as a carer and giving a 24 hour emergency contact number.
Once the Contingency Plan is agreed, in the event of an emergency affecting the carer, CERS will put the plan into action. This may for example, include contacting members of the family on behalf of the carer, providing additional care support to the family, or the team responding directly in order to ensure that the person with the care needs is looked after. This support covers a period of 48 hours (72 hours during Bank Holidays), after which, longer term care can be organised if necessary.

Many carers limit their experiences because of the fear of what would happen to the person they care for should they have an accident, suddenly become ill or were seriously delayed. This service aims to give carers peace of mind in the knowledge that their loved ones will be looked after according to their wishes.
CERS is funded by Cheshire East local authority through the Carers Grant.
