Are You a Young Carer?
Who is a young carer?
Young carers are children and young people under 18 whose lives are affected by the need to take responsibility for a person or sibling who may be chronically ill, have a disability, be experiencing mental health problems, be affected by alcohol and/or substance misuse or is elderly or infirm.

The person you are caring for may be
A parent, a brother or sister, grandparent or other relative. Your caring responsibilities may impact on your home and school life and may make it difficult to access the same social, leisure and educational activities as other young people.
Caring responsibilities you have may include:
As a young carer you may be a sole, supportive or sibling carer. You may have to undertake tasks such as:
- Budgeting and shopping
- Collecting prescriptions and benefits
- Housework
- All aspects of personal care
- Giving medication
- Lifting and moving
- Ensuring safety
- Parenting younger siblings
- Self care
Sometimes you may feel:
- Isolated
- Fearful
- Guilty
- Angry
- Lonely
- Stressed

If you are under 19 yrs and have caring responsibilities for someone who has a disability, long term illness, mental health problem or who uses drugs or alcohol, we can help to support you.
Crossroads Care Cheshire East has a Young Carers Project which is committed to ensuring young carers can access help and support, enjoy positive activities and access the opportunities available to other young people.
We offer:
- Practical and emotional support
- Group support
- One to one support
- Advocacy
- Advice and Information sessions
- Social Activities
- Day trips
- Residential trips
- Organising a short break for the person you look after whilst you attend your activity
- Funding for activities, lessons and family breaks
We can help you to have a break, meet other young people and, most importantly, have some fun!
